Synopsis:
In the midst of the Great War, Canada finds itself in the middle of a crisis that threatens to tear it apart. Conscription especially divides the French and English speakers of the country, all while families and communities try to grasp with the wretched horrors that are reported across the seas. Fighting Words is the story of how one community might have navigated the rough terrain of the conscription crisis of 1917.

The need for soldiers in France and Belgium becomes critical, conscription becomes an all-encompassing debate, pitting neighbors against each other and everyone questions their most basic of values. Narrated by the adult versions of the children who lived through the 1917 Crisis, Étienne and Flora relive it again as they are confronted by their own reality of conscription looming again in 1942.
